On Friday, the New London Whalers faced the Fitch Falcons in a battle between two of the state's top teams. New London took a 84-67 bruising from Fitch. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their last game last Friday (61), New London still had to take the loss.
Several Whalers players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Devan Williams, who scored 26 points along with three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Williams has scored all season. Cayden Simonds Gaskin was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Fitch's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jayvon "JJ" Robinson, who scored 28 points along with six assists and five steals. Robinson is absolutely dominating the point category: he's posted at least 15 every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Xavier Goode, who scored 29 points.
This is the second loss in a row for New London and nudges their season record down to 6-3. As for Fitch, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 8-2 record this season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. New London will stay at home for another game and welcome Bacon Academy at 6:30 p.m. on January 17th. Bacon Academy is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak. As for Fitch, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Stonington at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Stonington has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 265 points over their last four contests.
