Monterey Trail had lost six games straight , but after bumping their record up to 9-15 on Friday that streak is in the rearview. They won by a run and slipped past the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack 9-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mustangs have posted since April 5th.
Maya Ewing made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Aniyah Whipper, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Aliyah Ewing, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one triple.
As for Cosumnes Oaks, their loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 6-12. Those road defeats can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.0 runs over those games.
On Cosumnes Oaks' side, Amyah Avila spent all 7.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and four unearned) runs on six hits.
On the hitting side, Ava Fong was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Monterey Trail will face off against rival Laguna Creek at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Cosumnes Oaks is set to challenge their familiar foe Franklin at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
