The South Cougars posted their biggest victory since December 5, 2023 on Tuesday. They blew past Newton, posting a 46-14 win at home. Given South's advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 107th, while Newton is ranked 301st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading South to victory were Paityn Fritz and Brooklyn Jordan. Fritz dropped a double-double on 11 points and 15 rebounds, while Jordan scored 12 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. Jordan is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Tamia Cheeks, who scored eight points.
South's win bumped their record up to 7-4. As for Newton, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-6.
South will head out on the road to square off against Maize South on Tuesday. Maize South will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak. Newton on the road again on Thursday and play against Bishop Carroll at 8:15 p.m. on January 25th.
