The Berry Wildcats's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their fourth straight loss. They were beaten by Lamar County 61-33. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Berry of the 52-28 loss they experienced in the two teams' previous head-to-head fixture back in December of 2023.
Berry's loss came despite strong showings from Maggie Mauldin and Rylee Hill. Mauldin dropped a double-double on 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Hill dropped a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds. Hill is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last four games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Anna Palmer, who scored four points along with four steals.
Even though they lost, Berry smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Berry has not been sharp recently as the team's lost five of their last six matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-17 record this season. As for Lamar County, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-11.
Berry won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against the Lions at 5:00 p.m. on February 2nd. Hubbertville will be looking to extend their current six-game winning streak. Lamar County will be staying on the road on Saturday to face off against the Yellowjackets at 11:00 a.m. on February 3rd. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Alabama (Winston County is ranked 344th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 348th).
