Basketball Recap: Southwest Virginia Academy Takes a Loss

It was a good run, but Southwest Virginia Academy unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Thursday. They had to suffer through a 83-38 loss at the hands of the Roanoke Catholic Celtics. The Conquerors were probably out for revenge after losing 71-38 to them when the teams met back in December of 2022, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Southwest Virginia Academy's loss came despite strong showings from Gabriel Bishop and Jude Shelor. Bishop posted 18 points, while Shelor put up nine points and five rebounds. The match was Bishop's third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Rylan Janney, who earned two points and six rebounds.

Roanoke Catholic was led to victory by Jayden Johnson and Demarcus Brown. Johnson went 10 of 13 on his way to 23 points, while Brown went 6 of 11 on his way to 17 points along with six assists and five boards. That's the most points Johnson has posted since back in February of 2024. Yajae Hairston was another key player, putting up ten points.

Southwest Virginia Academy's defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 10-5. As for Roanoke Catholic, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-6.

Southwest Virginia Academy won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Dayspring Christian Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Southwest Virginia Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62.1 points per game this season. As for Roanoke Catholic, they will challenge Fishburne Military at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Roanoke Catholic's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last four games.
