Independence extended their losing streak to four on Thursday, dropping them down to 8-12. They fell 6-2 to the Leland Chargers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Chargers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 4-2 back in March.
Julieta Ramirez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six runs (all of which were unearned) on seven hits and racked up seven Ks.
At the plate, Independence saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mackenzy Sauao, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
As for Leland, they pushed their record up to 13-5 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.3 runs over those games.
On Leland's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Londyn Letts gave up two runs (both of which were unearned) on four hits and racked up eight Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Lily Silva, who went 2-for-4 with four stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Those four stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Irene Kim, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs.
Coming up, Independence will head out to challenge Silver Creek at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Leland, they will challenge Piedmont Hills at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Chargers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Pirates have averaged an impressive 9.6 runs per game this season.
