Jack Phillabaum made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases and two runs. Those four stolen bases gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Lucas Reder and Grayson Houchin did most of the damage at the plate: Reder went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one double, while Houchin went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run. That's the most RBI Reder has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Bryce McNair, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Summit Country Day was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .520. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Purcell Marian posted their closest win since May 1st on Wednesday. They had just enough and edged out Felicity-Franklin 7-5.
Like Summit Country Day, Purcell Marian also got a great game from a two-way player: Sonny Ward. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. Ward was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Purcell Marian's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-2 (and 3-13 when he doesn't).
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Eugene Ingram, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. He has become a key player for Purcell Marian: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least three RBI, but 5-14 otherwise. Ty Raleigh was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Summit Country Day has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-10 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Purcell Marian, their win bumped their record up to 7-15.
Summit Country Day took their victory against Purcell Marian in their previous meeting back in April by a conclusive 8-1 score. Will the Silver Knights repeat their success, or do the Cavaliers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
