The Newberry Panthers will square off against the Dixie County Bears at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Newberry is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
Newberry was handed a six-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Monday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Bell 7-5. The game was the first time the Panthers have beaten the Bulldogs on their field since February 10, 2018.
The team relied heavily on Tristan Layfield, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March. Gracie Mattson was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Meanwhile, Dixie County came into Monday's match having lost six straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They came out on top against Cedar Key by a score of 10-7 on Monday. The Bears' offense finally found a way to get into gear: the high-octane performance was a 180-degree turn from their last three games.
Katelyn Blevins was incredible, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run. Another player making a difference was Tearra Collins, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Newberry's victory bumped their record up to 16-5. As for Dixie County, their win bumped their record up to 3-15.
Dixie County's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Newberry has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.1 hits per game. It's a different story for Dixie County, though, as they've been averaging 10.3 hits. Given Newberry's sizable advantage in that area, the Bears will need to find a way to close that gap.
Newberry took their victory against Dixie County when the teams last played back in February by a conclusive 10-0 score. Will the Panthers repeat their success, or do the Bears have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
