Almont recap Oct. 9, 2012
Montebello took down Keppel 34-6 last week, the largest margin of any game.
The Oilers led Almont in scoring this week after putting up 34 points on the Aztecs.
San Gabriel's dynamic duo of Marqus Valenzuela and Isai Fernandez proved tough for Schurr to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Valenzuela threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns and Fernandez had 80 yards receiving. Gabriel Larios helped San Gabriel's passing attack out by catching one ball for 74 yards.
Ezra Broadus was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 17 carries, he ran for 130 yards as Alhambra fell to the Spartans. Teammate Daniel Diaz added to the ground attack by rushing for 31 yards.
San Gabriel's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Matadors feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Valenzuela has thrown for 1534 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, while Joseph Mayorga has 20 catches for 467 yards. Mayorga leads the league in rushing with 488 yards.
A big matchup in Almont this week will be when Bell Gardens takes on Schurr. The Lancers are currently in second, while the Spartans are in third.
There should be lots of points scored when Montebello and San Gabriel face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Pete Gonzalez's team comes in having scored 165 this season, while Jude Oliva's team has scored 169. The Oilers scored 34 points last week as they beat Keppel.
Bell Gardens made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 6,998 from 7,298. The advance stemmed from a 30-13 victory over the Moors last week.
