The Pueblo South Colts's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their fifth straight loss. They were outmatched by Pueblo East at home and fell 61-21. Pueblo South was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 44-9.
Gracie Gonzales and Jaime Pearson certainly did their best on Monday to try and avoid the loss. Gonzales scored five points along with four blocks, while Pearson scored seven points along with seven rebounds and two steals. Pearson has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played.
Pueblo East found their leader in underclassman Myah Abeyta, who scored 25 points. Another player making a difference was Ilyne Avila, who scored four points along with seven rebounds and seven steals.
Pueblo South has not been sharp recently, as they've lost eight of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-10 record this season. As for Pueblo East, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-8.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Pueblo South will take on Pueblo Centennial at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Pueblo Centennial is out to stop a three-game streak of losses at home. Pueblo East on the road again on Thursday and play against Pueblo West at 7:30 p.m. on January 18th. Pueblo West presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Pueblo East in Colorado (Pueblo West is ranked 49th, while Pueblo East is ranked 184th).
