Layton got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Tillman Thomas out in front who threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns. A healthy portion of that aerial production (99 yards to be exact) went to Nathan Mecham, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.
Another reason for the win was Layton's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. Parker LeDuc was especially locked on to Cedar Valley's QB and sacked him twice.
Meanwhile, Corner Canyon faced Lehi in a battle between two of the state's top teams two weeks ago. The Chargers blew past the Pioneers 56-3. Considering the Chargers have won seven contests by more than 24 points this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Layton better keep an eye on Helaman Casuga. He was instrumental in Corner Canyon's win, throwing for 286 yards and four TDs while picking up 11.9 yards per attempt, and also rushing for 42 yards. Kai Meza was another key pass catcher, picking up 120 receiving yards and a pair of scores.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Corner Canyon proved: they limited Lehi to a paltry two yards per carry. The team can thank Mason Wood for the heroic effort on defense: he. Corner Canyon didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 6.5.
Corner Canyon didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Fui Vakapuna and Brighton Shepard. Jayden Pearce was another major factor on D, picking up two sacks and making six total tackles.
Layton's record is now 3-8. As for Corner Canyon, their record now sits at 8-1.
Layton was dealt a bruising 52-0 loss at the hands of Corner Canyon when the teams last played back in October of 2023. Thankfully for the Lancers, Brayden Eyre (who picked up 136 receiving yards and one touchdown) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
