The Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds will venture away from home to challenge the Bonduel Bears at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Iola-Scandinavia is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
Wittenberg-Birnamwood hit Iola-Scandinavia with a five-run sixth inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Thunderbirds fell 10-5 to the Chargers. The Thunderbirds' defeat signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Iola-Scandinavia saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Maya Munoz, who went 3-for-4 with one run. Libby Maus also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Bonduel came tearing into Monday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured an 8-7 W against the Chargers. The game was the first time the Bears have beaten the Chargers on their field since April 25, 2019.
Kallie Wilcox looked comfortable as she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Tatum Sporisky, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Another player making a difference was Taylor Rank, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run.
Bonduel kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits every time they've taken the field this season.
Iola-Scandinavia's loss dropped their record down to 5-3. As for Bonduel, their record is now 4-1.
Monday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Iola-Scandinavia hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .362. However, it's not like Bonduel struggles in that department as they've averaged .449. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Iola-Scandinavia came out on top in a nail-biter against Bonduel when the teams last played back in April of 2024, sneaking past 2-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Thunderbirds since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
