The Freeport Pretzels will be staying on the road on Monday to face off against the Byron Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on January 22nd. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Even though Freeport has not done well against Rockford Auburn recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Freeport came out on top against Rockford Auburn by a score of 54-42. The win was all the more spectacular given Freeport's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 282nd, while Rockford Auburn is ranked 115th).
It was another big night for Dedric Macon, who scored 24 points along with four steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of Freeport's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Reid Pierson, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Meanwhile, Byron put another one in the bag on Saturday to keep their perfect season alive. They took their contest on the road with ease, bagging a 73-40 victory over Dakota. Byron has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 12 contests by 20 points or more this season.
Freeport has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-9 record this season. As for Byron, their victory bumped their record up to 16-0.
Freeport didn't have too much breathing room in their matchup against Byron when the teams last played back in January of 2020, but they still walked away with a 51-46 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Freeport since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
