The St. Joseph Academy Flashes are taking a road trip to square off against the Suwannee Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. St. Joseph Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.6 runs per game this season.
St. Joseph Academy will roll into the match after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs on Tuesday, then bounced right back against Old Plank Christian Academy on Thursday. St. Joseph Academy blew past Old Plank Christian Academy 10-0.
Neil Gornto tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only a hit over 4.1 innings pitched. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single earned run, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in April of 2024.
On the hitting side, St. Joseph Academy got a big performance out of Garrison Wade, who scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Patrick Mullahy, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
St. Joseph Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .630. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Old Plank Christian Academy only posted an OBP of .316.
Meanwhile, Suwannee fell victim to St. Johns Country Day and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They came up short against the Spartans, falling 8-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Bulldogs have suffered since March 15, 2024.
Suwannee saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Noah Lopez, who went 1-for-2 with one double. That double was Lopez's first of the season.
Suwannee's defeat dropped their record down to 4-3. As for St. Joseph Academy, their record is now 4-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. St. Joseph Academy has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 11.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Suwannee struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
St. Joseph Academy came out on top in a nail-biter against Suwannee in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, sneaking past 5-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for St. Joseph Academy since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
