The East Carteret Mariners will venture away from home to square off against the Pamlico County Hurricanes at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. East Carteret will be strutting in after a victory while Pamlico County will be coming in after a defeat.
East Carteret took a nine-run loss the last time they faced off against Northside - Pinetown, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Mariners had just enough and edged out the Panthers 8-7 on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Mariners have posted since April 23, 2024.
Amilya Lewis made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off five hits. Lewis was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Mali Peck was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. Ashley Mintz also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
East Carteret hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least four batters in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, after a string of nine wins, Pamlico County's good fortune finally ran out on Thursday. They fell just short of New Bern by a score of 3-2. The matchup marked the Hurricanes' lowest-scoring game so far this season.
Pamlico County saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Peyton Robinson, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. Another was Hailey Shamblin, who scored a run while going 3-for-3.
East Carteret pushed their record up to 7-8 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Pamlico County, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. East Carteret has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Pamlico County struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
East Carteret suffered a grim 17-0 defeat to Pamlico County when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Mariners avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
