Basketball Recap: Cary Academy Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

Cary Academy had lost six straight headed into Thursday's matchup, but Annalise Dematteis didn't let it get to seven. The Cary Academy Chargers came out on top against the St. Thomas More Academy Chancellors by a score of 31-23 on Thursday thanks in part to Dematteis, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine boards. That makes it three consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Cary Academy's points.

The team also got some help courtesy of Jasmine Phillips, who posted four points. She has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times she's played.

Adella Dehring and Winnie Dehring certainly did their best on Thursday to avoid the loss. Adella had eight points along with seven boards and six steals, while Winnie earned nine points in addition to seven rebounds and six steals. Adella is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Maire Kelly, who put up four points and three steals.

Cary Academy's victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 6-6. As for St. Thomas More Academy, they dropped their record down to 4-9 with the defeat, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cary Academy will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against North Raleigh Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on January 7, 2025. After both having extra time off, St. Thomas More Academy and Trinity of Durham and Chapel Hill will dust off their jerseys to square off against one another at 5:30 p.m. on January 3, 2025. St. Thomas More Academy is facing Trinity of Durham and Chapel Hill at the right time seeing as Trinity of Durham and Chapel Hill is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
