In what's become a running theme this season, Syracuse gave their fans yet another huge victory on Friday. They blew past Farmington 68-30 at home. Given Syracuse's advantage in MaxPreps' Utah basketball rankings (they are ranked seventh, while Farmington is ranked 109th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Avery Sanders, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Cortnie Barker, who scored nine points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Meanwhile, Layton suffered their biggest loss since November 28, 2023 on Friday. They took a serious blow against Fremont, falling 50-20. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss Layton has suffered against Fremont since February 18, 2021.
Layton's defeat came about despite a quality game from Roxy Casper, who scored nine points along with six rebounds and four steals. Casper is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Layton struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Syracuse pushed their record up to 14-3 with that win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.6 points per game. As for Layton, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost six of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-11 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Syracuse have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 28.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Layton struggles in that department as they've been averaging 27.3 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Everything came up roses for Syracuse against Layton in their previous meeting on January 12th as the team secured a 59-23 victory. With Syracuse ahead 28-8 at the half, the match was all but over already.
