Basketball Recap: Magdalena Piles Up the Points Against Animas

Magdalena won the last time they faced Animas and things went their way on Saturday too. The Magdalena Steers claimed a resounding 56-21 win over the Animas Panthers. The Steers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 12 games by 21 points or more this season.

Magdalena's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jorianne Mirabal, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and ten rebounds. Mirabal is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down nine or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Jema Ganadonegro, who posted ten points and five steals.

Magdalena was working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Animas only posted three assists.

Despite the loss, Animas had strong showings from Haley Elias, who had 11 points, and Camila Nevarez, who put up no points. What's more, Elias also posted a 44% shooting accuracy, which is the highest she's posted since back in December of 2024.

Magdalena is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a nice bump to their 18-5 record this season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 27.3 points. As for Animas, their defeat was their fifth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 7-12.

Coming up, Magdalena will head out to square off against Cliff at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Cliff's defense has only allowed 28.9 points per game this season, so Magdalena's offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Animas, they will welcome Reserve at 3:00 p.m. on February 15th.
