Cortez was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss dating back to last season. They were a single point away from ending the streak, but they lost a 46-45 heartbreaker at the hands of the Chino Valley Cougars. On the bright side, the 45- point effort marked the Colts' highest-scoring game to date.
Despite the loss, Cortez still got an impressive performance from Jamerrius Anthony, who rushed for 187 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 9.4 yards per carry, and also threw for 88 yards and one TD on only six passes. Anthony's rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 151 rushing yards. Adryan Covarrubias helped out on the ground, rushing for 129 yards.
Cortez's defeat dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Chino Valley, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 3-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cortez will face off against Antelope at 7:00 p.m. on the 19th. As for Chino Valley, they will square off against Kingman Academy at 7:00 p.m. on the 19th.
