On the same day,
Westhill (Syracuse, N.Y.) had outstanding performances in both softball and baseball.
Junior softball star
Kelly Mascari hammered a school-record four home runs during a 13-1 rout of Skaneateles after going homerless during the first eight games of the season. In addition, she drove in 10 runs, which also is believed to be a school record.
Meanwhile, baseball pitcher
Alex Godzak was at his very best as he fired a no-hitter and struck out 15 during a 1-0 victory over Skaneateles. The Canisius recruit, who walked only three, also singled in the game's lone run during the sixth inning.
*Another softball player,
Bre Cuff of
Landrum (S.C.), slammed three home runs and drove in seven runs during a 10-0 rout of Ware Shoals (S.C.). All three were long blasts to dead center field.
*In another baseball game,
Monticello (Ill.) blanked Maroa-Forsyth (Maroa, Ill.) 8-0 behind the no-hit pitching of Jacob Williams, who overcame four errors by striking out 18.
*
Jon Ellerbrock pitched his first no-hitter with a career-high 17 strikeouts as
Bethel (Tipp City, Ohio) shut out Mississinawa Valley (Union City, Ohio) 7-0.
*
Chartiers Valley (Bridgeville, Pa.) edged
Keystone Oaks (Pittsburgh, Pa.) 2-0 despite being held hitless by
John Beveridge. Both runs scored in the third inning, aided greatly by two throwing errors. Winning pitcher Matt Mulvihill gave up just three hits and no walks.
*
Rice Memorial (South Burlington, Vt.) defeated Burlington (Vt.) 3-1 as Tim Rensch struck out 17 and scattered three hits.
