The Mathis Pirates will head out on the road to face off against the London Pirates at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Given that both teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.
Last Thursday, Mathis had to suffer through a rough 49-16 loss at the hands of Edna. Mathis was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 27-0.
Despite the defeat, Mathis saw an underclassman step up: Edward Montemayor rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.0 yards per carry.
Meanwhile, London was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Friday as they fell 34-29 to Goliad. While losing is never fun, London can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 672nd, while Goliad is ranked 312th).
Mathis' defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their overall record down to 3-5. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 8.0 points per game. As for London, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-5.
Mathis might still be hurting after the 36-12 loss they got from London in their previous matchup back in November of 2022. Can Mathis avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
