The Callaway Chargers suffered their biggest loss yet this season on Saturday. They suffered a tough 62-36 defeat at the hands of Starkville. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Callaway in their matchups with Starkville: they've now lost seven in a row.
Callaway's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Shelbie Walker, who scored four points along with nine rebounds. Jernae Ringgold was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with five rebounds.
Even though they lost, Callaway smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Starkville only pulled down ten offensive rebounds.
Starkville's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Zariyah Edwards led the charge by dropping a double-double on 17 points and 14 rebounds. Edwards has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jada Gay, who scored 20 points along with two blocks.
Callaway's loss dropped their record down to 15-6. As for Starkville, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-3.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Callaway will take on Vicksburg at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Vicksburg will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Mississippi Rankings (they are ranked 140th, while Callaway is ranked 27th). As for Starkville, Starkville and Murrah will face off at 6:00 p.m. on January 19th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Murrah is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak.
