La Plata and Leonardtown are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2015, but likely not for long. The Warriors will head out on the road to square off against the Raiders at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. La Plata is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.1 runs per game this season.
Saturday just wasn't the day for La Plata's offense. They took a 3-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of Dulaney on Saturday. Having soared to a lofty 16 runs in the game before, the Warriors' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
La Plata saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Reese Menejia, who went 2-for-3 with one double.
Meanwhile, Leonardtown had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9 runs) and they went ahead and made it five on Saturday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Marriotts Ridge an 11-0 shutout. The Raiders might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matchups by 11 runs or more this season.
Kayla Howard was a major factor no matter where she played. She kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. Howard was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Leonardtown got a massive performance out of Kendall Wathen, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one double. That home run marked the first that Wathen has launched this season. Lindsay Hunter was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs.
Leonardtown was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .429. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Marriotts Ridge only posted a batting average of .000.
Leonardtown's record now sits at 12-1. As for La Plata, the loss snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 7-4 record.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. La Plata has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 11.7 hits per game. However, it's not like Leonardtown struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 2.1 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
La Plata skirted past Leonardtown 2-1 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Warriors since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
