The Mt. Whitney Pioneers entered their tilt with the Redwood Rangers with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. Mt. Whitney secured a 20-14 W over Redwood on Friday. For Mt. Whitney, this counts as revenge for the 28-0 defeat Redwood walked away with the last time they faced one another back in October of 2022.
Mt. Whitney's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Micah Rodriguez, who threw for 179 yards and three touchdowns.
Despite the loss, Redwood still got an impressive performance from Jimmie Burk, who rushed for 190 yards and a touchdown while picking up 7.0 yards per carry.
Even if they lost, Redwood's defense sure didn't make it easy: Mt. Whitney's QB was sacked six times before it was all said and done. The heavy lifting was done by Kai Preisendorf and Jesse Bautista who racked up 4.5 sacks between them.
Mt. Whitney's win was their third straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 7-3. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-9 El Diamante and 3-7 Reedley (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 33.3% over those games). As for Redwood, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-4.
Mt. Whitney will be playing in front of their home fans against Nipomo at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Redwood, they will head out on the road to face off against Sunnyside at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Sunnyside has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 380 points over their last seven matches.
