Baseball Recap: Hickory Flat Comes Up Short

Hickory Flat had lost three straight at home, but on Monday they dropped down to 2-7 to make it four. They lost 20-2 to the Falkner Eagles. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Eagles this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 12-2 back in February.

Hickory Flat saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Nick Talley, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. Talley is becoming a predictor of the Rebels' success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 2-1 (and 0-6 when he doesn't). Tyler Garner also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

As for Falkner, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. Considering they have won six contests by more than six runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

On Falkner's side, Graydon Newby made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over six innings pitched. Newby has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, four runs, and two doubles. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March of 2025.

In other batting news, Colee Stroupe was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Anthony Morgan, who went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs.

Coincidentally, Hickory Flat and Falkner will both be playing Biggersville the next time they take the field. The Eagles will head out to face the Lions at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while the Rebels will host them at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
