Basketball Recap: Southwest Snaps Four-Game Streak of Wins at Home

Southwest suffered their biggest defeat since November 22, 2024 on Friday. They lost 72-50 to the Jay Mustangs. The Dragons haven't had much luck with the Mustangs recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.

Southwest's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Elijah Sommers, who made all 6 shots he took racking up 12 points and five rebounds. Those 12 points gave Sommers a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Enrique Torrez, who posted 12 points.

Even though they lost, Southwest smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Jay only pulled down seven offensive rebounds.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Jay to victory, but perhaps none more so than Zachariah Linson, who went 5 of 8 en route to 14 points and six boards. Linson is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last four games he's played. Jarrius Jackson Jr was another key player, going 10 for 15 on his way to 24 points and three steals.

Southwest's defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 16-10. As for Jay, they are on a roll lately: they've won 15 of their last 16 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 23-2 record this season.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Southside the next time they take the court. Southwest will head out to face Southside at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while Jay will host them at 8:00 p.m. on January 17th.
