The Woodsboro Eagles will take on the San Diego Vaqueros at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday. Woodsboro is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last five games.
Woodsboro's tournament run continued when they took on Alice on Saturday. The Eagles put the hurt on the Coyotes with a sharp 17-1 win. With that victory, the Eagles brought their scoring average up to 7.5 runs per game.
Sidney Castillo made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs.
In other batting news, Kaygen Lewis was a standout: she got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That home run was her first of the season. Aniya Zena was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs.
Woodsboro kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Alice only managed two.
Meanwhile, after soaring to ten runs the game before, San Diego was a bit more limited in their game on Monday. They came up short against Robstown, falling 17-2. The Vaqueros haven't had much luck with the Cottonpickers recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
San Diego saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Amy Gamez, who went 1-for-2 with one run.
Woodsboro's win bumped their record up to 5-1. As for San Diego, their loss dropped their record down to 1-3.
San Diego's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Woodsboro has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for San Diego, though, as they've been averaging only 4 strikeouts. Will Woodsboro keep running through batters, or will the Vaqueros buck the trend?
Woodsboro might still be hurting after the 6-0 defeat they got from San Diego in their previous meeting back in February of 2024. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
