Baseball Game Preview: Calvert Senecas vs. St. Paul Flyers

Calvert is 7-1 against St. Paul since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Senecas will square off against the Flyers at 2:00 p.m. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Calvert sitting on 12 straight victories and St. Paul on three.

Calvert is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Thursday. They never let Old Fort get on the board and left with a 12-0 win. Considering the Senecas have won 16 matchups by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Calvert's victory was truly a team effort as eight different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Vincenzo Lyons, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Those three hits gave Lyons a new career-high.

Calvert was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .321 or higher in eight consecutive games.

Meanwhile, St. Paul posted their closest win since April 30th on Thursday. They won by a run and slipped past St. Mary Central Catholic 3-2.

Alex Marsh spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on six hits and racked up seven Ks.

Calvert pushed their record up to 24-3 with the victory, which was their 14th straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.4 runs over those games. As for St. Paul, their victory bumped their record up to 13-10.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Calvert has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like St. Paul struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Calvert beat St. Paul 8-3 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Will the Senecas repeat their success, or do the Flyers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
