The Skyline Coyotes will head out to take on the West Point Dragons at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.
Last Thursday, Skyline didn't have quite enough to beat Mountain View and fell 3-2.
Chase Gillmore was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He pitched five innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-low in walks (one). He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI.
In other batting news, Evan Becket made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 1-for-2 with one triple and one run. That triple was his first of the season.
Meanwhile, West Point suffered their biggest defeat since March 9th on Thursday. They came up short against Shadow Ridge, falling 17-7. The Dragons have struggled against the Stallions recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
Kenyer Martinez was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run and five RBI. He is becoming a predictor of West Point's success: when he posts at least one home run the team is 4-1 (and 4-5 when he doesn't).
Skyline's loss was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 10-8. As for West Point, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-6.
Skyline's speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's matchup. The Coyotes have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for West Point, though, as they've been averaging only 1.4 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Skyline continue to outrun the ball?
