King Kekaulike and Kamehameha Maui are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2019, but likely not for long. King Kekaulike will venture away from home to face off against Kamehameha Maui at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (King Kekaulike has four straight victories, Kamehameha Maui has 12 straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
King Kekaulike is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Hawaii's top teams: Lahainaluna, who was ranked tenth at the time (King Kekaulike was ranked fourth). King Kekaulike blew past Lahainaluna 14-0 on Saturday. The result was nothing new for the Na Ali'i, who have now won three games by ten runs or more so far this season.
Hulali Williams made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI.
In other batting news, King Kekaulike let Chiyo Salas and Hilina'I Kuala'Au-Abbey run wild. Salas scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances, while Kuala'Au-Abbey went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Kaleimaile Garcia also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
King Kekaulike hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most four strikeouts every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, Kamehameha Maui fell victim to Baldwin and their airtight pitching crew on Wednesday. They lost 15-0 to the Bears.
King Kekaulike's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 4-1. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Kamehameha Maui, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-6.
Kamehameha Maui's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: King Kekaulike hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .406. It's a different story for Kamehameha Maui, though, as they've only averaged .222. Will they be able to contain King Kekaulike's hitters?
King Kekaulike took their win against Kamehameha Maui in their previous matchup two weeks ago by a conclusive 13-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for King Kekaulike since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
