Sahuarita has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Apache Junction Prospectors at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Sahuarita focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up five on Thursday.
Sahuarita struggled with assists on Thursday (Tanque Verde had 800% more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Sahuarita fell 49-42 to Tanque Verde. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Sahuarita in their matchups with Tanque Verde: they've now lost five in a row.
Alejandro Vega put forth a good effort for the losing side as he scored 11 points along with 7 rebounds. He continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Ruben Villalba, who scored 9 points.
Meanwhile, Apache Junction had to suffer through a rough 63-27 loss at the hands of Poston Butte. Apache Junction has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Omar Adam, who scored 11 points along with 8 rebounds. Josh Castro was another key contributor, scoring 8 points.
Safford's victory bumped their season record to 0-0 while Sahuarita's defeat dropped theirs to 2-6.
Keep an eye on the arc in Monday's match: Sahuarita have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 5.2 threes per game. It's a different story for Apache Junction, though, as they've been averaging only 4 per game. Given Sahuarita's sizeable advantage in that area, Apache Junction will need to find a way to close that gap. Come back here after the game to get analysis of the match and other basketball content.
Everything came up roses for Sahuarita against Apache Junction in their previous meeting back in December of 2022 as the squad secured a 71-23 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Sahuarita since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
