Graphic Communication Arts (New York, N.Y.) High School, is known for their vocational classes such as photography, journalism, law, and print media. However, there's more to this school than just hands-on career classes. It's a school that is highly involved in their sports and athletes. Whether its basketball or baseball, Graphics is very interacted in their sports.
Graphics High School has a variety of sports which include varsity and junior varsity basketball and baseball, varsity girls' basketball and softball, boys bowling, boy's handball, boys & girl's volleyball and track for both genders as well. Some teams have been successful and some have been stuck in a slump for a couple of years.
The varsity boys' basketball team has been having a beautiful record for the past three winter seasons: ‘09 with a record of 11-5, and ‘10 - '11 with a record of 15-1. They have been Graphic's best teams so far, having an undefeated record for the past two years. After winning the Division B-3 crown, Graphic Devils moved up to the A division. Where they took over 15 out of 16 games with the assistance of their significant players: seniors Quay Shaun Mitchell and Robert Spencer and juniors Grady King and Ricardo Ayuso. The undefeated Devils moved on to playoffs this season with their strong and dedicated players hoping to take it all. After winning almost every single game in their regular season; the Devils lost their chance to go to the championships to Clinton High School by only 3 points.
Unlike the basketball team, Devil's baseball is doing otherwise. With a record of 4-11 last season, the varsity baseball team is not doing any better this year. They currently have a record of 3-10 so far with three games left. Ending in second to last place for the last four years, the baseball team has been in a very bad slump. Yet it has powerful players that could make it possible to turn those numbers around.
The 20 man roster team contains only one player with an average of above .500 and an outstanding slugging percentage. Steven Delacruz, who led the league in slugging percentage last season, is batting at a .529 average and pitching with a 2-1 record and a 4.38 record. The Devil's powerful hitters are just not enough for this team to get to playoffs.
Graphic High School has 12 active sports, five of them with winning records throughout the years.
Maybe the school should drop the mascot on their uniforms like the softball coach, Teddy Mallory did last season. After years of playing seasons with no wins, the softball team finally got to experience the feeling of victory for the past two consecutive years. It's all a superstitious thought, but it did work for the varsity softball team.
Graphic's sports history is based on a rollercoaster. They have a good season one year and a bad season another, but then again, that's the whole idea behind sports. Isn't it?
