On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Sean Concannon, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Sam Mueller also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Iona Prep hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in four consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, it was a Battle of the Birds when St. Peter's faced off against St. Raymond Boys on Friday. The Eagles fell just short of the Ravens by a score of 3-2. The Eagles' defeat signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.
St. Peter's also got a good showing from Joe Bello, who didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched.
At the plate, St. Peter's saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Justin Levine, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Iona Prep has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for St. Peter's, their loss dropped their record down to 8-2.
Monday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Iona Prep has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .486. However, it's not like St. Peter's struggles in that department as they've averaged .450. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Iona Prep beat St. Peter's 4-1 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Gaels since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
