The Calais Blue Devils will face off against the Washington Academy Raiders at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Calais has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the matchup with three straight losses, while Washington Academy will come in with three straight wins.
Jonesport-Beals hit Calais with a 14-run second inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Blue Devils lost 17-4 to the Royals.
Kayleigh Scott was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Natalie McDonald, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Washington Academy ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Foxcroft Academy, sneaking past 5-3.
Bella Cirone made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out 16 batters over eight innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than 11 strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. That hit was her first of the season.
Cirone wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Avery Libby, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run. Libby is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Meadow Rohde was another, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Calais' defeat dropped their record down to 1-6. As for Washington Academy, their victory bumped their record up to 4-1.
Washington Academy's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Calais hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .357. It's a different story for Washington Academy, though, as they've only averaged .222. Will they be able to contain Calais' hitters?
Calais couldn't quite finish off Washington Academy in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 and fell 6-4. Can the Blue Devils avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
