South Bend Saint Joseph and Mishawaka Marian are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Huskies will challenge the Knights at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
South Bend Saint Joseph is headed into the matchup with an undefeated record on the line, something Mishawaka almost spoiled on Monday. The Huskies had just enough and edged out the Cavemen 7-5. The seven-run effort marked the Huskies' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
South Bend Saint Joseph got a great performance from Julian Cosey as he pitched six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Joe Washburn, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. That home run was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Brett Mason, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and one stolen base.
South Bend Saint Joseph lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in May of 2024.
Meanwhile, Mishawaka Marian had already won two in a row and they went ahead and made it three on Saturday. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured an 11-10 W against the Eagles.
Vinny Gruber was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
South Bend Saint Joseph pushed their record up to 5-0 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. The team's perfect season has a lot to do with their hitting performance: the team's won by an average of 7.5 runs thus far. As for Mishawaka Marian, their record now sits at 3-1.
Tuesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. South Bend Saint Joseph hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .359. However, it's not like Mishawaka Marian struggles in that department as they've averaged .340. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
