Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Naperville North). They were the clear victors by a 12-0 margin over the Metea Valley Mustangs on Thursday. Winning may never get old, but the Huskies sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
Matt Sonnenschein was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with four RBI and one triple. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sam Steele, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, one double, and one RBI. He continues to improve, besting his previous run total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Zach Bava, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs.
Naperville North kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Metea Valley only managed one hit.
The victory got Naperville North back to even at 10-10. As for Metea Valley, they are on a ten-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 9-14.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Naperville North will venture away from home to challenge Benet Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Redwings' pitching crew has only allowed four runs per game this season, so the Huskies' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Metea Valley, they will head out to take on Taft at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
