The Flagstaff Eagles will be taking part in a tournament against the Nogales Apaches at 11:30 a.m. on Friday. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.
Nogales will be up against a hot Flagstaff squad: the team just extended their winning streak to four. Flagstaff put the hurt on Cienega with a sharp 12-2 victory on Thursday. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three matches by eight runs or more this season.
Will Carpenter was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in April of 2024. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple was his first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cullen Callander, who scored two runs while going 3-for-3. What's more, he posted three RBI, the most he's had since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Brody Johnson, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Flagstaff always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .548. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cienega only posted an OBP of .250.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Nogales). Everything went their way against St. Mary's on Wednesday as Nogales made off with a 12-4 win. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Apaches.
Nogales pushed their record up to 4-4-1 with the victory, which was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.9 runs on average over those games. As for Flagstaff, their win bumped their record up to 6-3.
Flagstaff suffered a grim 14-3 defeat to Nogales in their previous matchup back in March of 2018. Will Flagstaff have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
