Baseball Recap: Cairo-Durham Starts Season with Win at Home

Cairo-Durham gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Monday. They came out on top against the Windham-Ashland-Jewett Warriors by a score of 7-4. The win continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Warriors: they've now won three in a row.

Jacob Young and Logan Walz made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Young pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Walz tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-low in walks (zero). At bat, Young scored a run and stole three bases while going 1-for-3, while Walz scored a run and stole two bases while going 3-for-3. What's more, Walz posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Michael Pernice was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2. Another player making a difference was Peter Jobson, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.

Coming up, Cairo-Durham will challenge Catskill at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Windham-Ashland-Jewett, they will host South Kortright Central at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
