Longtime state record holders like Jake Browning of
Folsom (Calif.), Tucker Israel of
Lake Nona (Orlando, Fla.) and Brett Law of
Sheridan (Ind.) could all have their names bumped from the top line of their respective record books during the 2025 high school football season.
Brady Smigiel of
Newbury Park (Calif.),
Sabby Meassick of
Tohopekaliga (Kissimmee, Fla.) and
Myles McLaughlin of
Knox (Ind.) are all on the verge of breaking state records, some up to 35 years old. They join a list of 16 players MaxPreps has identified as potential state record breakers.
Smigiel is in his fourth year as a starter at Newbury Park and already has over 11,549 yards heading into his senior year. He will need a spectacular senior year to top Browning, who graduated in 2014 with many state records to his credit including career yards with 16,775. Smigiel also has a chance to break Browning's career records for completions and attempts, although those may be a little more difficult to reach.

Meassick, meanwhile, has played quarterback since his eighth grade season and he is within easy reach of Israel's records for career completions, attempts and touchdowns. Meassick may break the completions and attempts records by mid-season, since he needs just 111 completions and 125 attempts to break the records. He will need 57 touchdowns to break that record. Meassick should also surpass Ennio Yapoor's record for career yards of 14,129 broke last year by the end of the regular season.
McLaughlin is well within reach of Law's scoring records, which have stood since 1989. McLaughlin needs just 24 touchdowns to break Law's career mark of 141. He also needs 235 points to break Law's record of 952 career points. At the time he broke them, Law's touchdown and points were both national records.
Several players in the Class of 2026 have already broke state records and two of them play for
Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.). Receiver
Jasen Lopez surpassed the state record for career receptions last year with 257. He could break the career receiving yardage mark of 4,594 yards held by former NFL player Darrell Jackson of
Tampa Catholic (Tampa) in 1996. He can also break the touchdown reception record of 57 held by Jamal Reid of
Lafayette (Mayo) in 2009.
Lopez's teammate, kicker
Noah Sidan, tied the state single-season extra points record last year with 91. He could break the career record of 241 extra points by Alex Petruzzello of
Cocoa.
Gavin Polk of
Ouachita Christian (Monroe, La.) looks to extend a pair kicking records in Louisiana. He broke the state record for career extra points with 199 last year. He also holds the state record for kicking points with 238.
