Laguna Creek and the Mustangs are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2019, but not for long. The Laguna Creek Cardinals will head out on the road to challenge the Monterey Trail Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Laguna Creek comes in on six and the Mustangs on five.
Even though River City scored an imposing 57 points on Wednesday, Laguna Creek still came out on top. Laguna Creek took their match against the Raiders 69-57. Given Laguna Creek's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 157th, while the Raiders are ranked 729th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Laguna Creek found their leader in underclassman Jaylan Virgil, who scored 23 points along with seven rebounds. Jalen Flenory was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with nine rebounds and seven assists.
Meanwhile, even though Edison scored an imposing 58 points on Saturday, Monterey Trail still came out on top. Monterey Trail took down the Vikings 72-58.
Laguna Creek is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a massive bump to their 16-9 record this season. As for Monterey Trail, their victory bumped their record up to 23-2.
Things could have been worse for Laguna Creek, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 72-55 loss to the Mustangs when the teams last played back in January. Can Laguna Creek avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
