A feisty cat fight will be fought as Munford Cougars challenge Brighton Cardinals at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Munford is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
Munford fell victim to Northpoint Christian and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They came up short against the Trojans, falling 10-0. The Cougars' loss signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.
Munford saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gabriel Jones, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one double.
Meanwhile, Brighton waltzed into their match on Thursday with three straight wins... but they left with four. Everything went their way against the Chargers as they made off with a 17-7 win. The Cardinals might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by seven runs or more this season.
Laney Lawson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and three unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up eight Ks. Those eight strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.
On the hitting side, Brighton got a massive performance out of Kaitlyn Chapman, who went 4-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Chapman continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Keegan Stepp was another key player, going 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and one double.
Brighton kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Munford's defeat dropped their record down to 7-5. As for Brighton, their record now sits at 9-6-2.
Tuesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Munford hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .351. However, it's not like Brighton struggles in that department as they've averaged .394. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Munford couldn't quite finish off Brighton when the teams last played back in May of 2024 and fell 8-6. Can Munford avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
