Having just played yesterday, the Greene County Wildcats will head out on the road to face off against the Biloxi Indians at 5:30 p.m. on December 29th. Greene County will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Mississippi Rankings (they are ranked 123rd, while Biloxi is ranked 13th).
It's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 74-39, which was the final score in Greene County's tilt against D'Iberville on Thursday. Greene County was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 44-23.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Kam Lawrence, who scored eight points along with three steals. Lillian Rau was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with eight rebounds.
Biloxi has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 matches by 20 points or more this season. They blew past St. Scholastica 57-22 at home. The victory was nothing new for Biloxi as they're now sitting on seven straight.
Biloxi found their leader in underclassman Zaniya Johnson, who dropped a double-double on 43 points and 13 rebounds. The matchup was Johnson's fifth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Aaliyah Davison, who scored four points along with eight assists.
This is the second loss in a row for Greene County and nudges their season record down to 10-8. As for Biloxi, their win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-1.
Friday's matchup is shaping up to be a scrappy matchup: Greene County have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 29.4 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Biloxi, though, as they've been averaging only 25.6 rebounds per game. Given Greene County's sizeable advantage in that area, Biloxi will need to find a way to close that gap.
Greene County came up short against Biloxi when the teams last played back in November of 2014, falling 54-49. Thankfully for Greene County, Marissa Taylor (who scored 19 points along with seven rebounds and three steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
