Kit Carson is headed into the matchup out to prove that what happened against Evangel Christian Academy on Saturday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Kit Carson lost 64-40 to Evangel Christian Academy.
Despite the loss, Kit Carson saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Avery Johnson went 6 of 12 on her way to 14 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Shay Rady, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 boards.
Meanwhile, Cheyenne Wells came up short against Hi-Plains on Saturday and fell 46-35. While the Tigers didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Patriots 10-5 in the first quarter.
Kit Carson will have to contain Paige Ryser as she made an impact in Cheyenne Wells' last game. She posted nine points in addition to seven rebounds and seven steals. Ryser has been hot for a while, having posted three or more steals the last 13 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Evan Scheimer, who scored five points.
Even though they lost, Cheyenne Wells smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in four consecutive contests.
Kit Carson's record now sits at 7-7. As for Cheyenne Wells, their record is now 9-6.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Kit Carson has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 29.8 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Cheyenne Wells struggles in that department as they've been averaging 29.6 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Kit Carson came up short against Cheyenne Wells when the teams last played back in February of 2024, falling 43-33. Can Kit Carson avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
