AAAA Region 5 recap November 5, 2013
Adding to the longest winning streak in AAAA Region 5 this week, Sandy Creek beat Carrollton 24-7. This was the team's eighth consecutive win.
Shaw moved up to 215 from 243 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Raiders climbed the ranks as a result of topping Fayette County 17-7.
Columbus's dynamic duo of Derrick James and Essang Bassey proved tough for Alexander to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. James threw for 262 yards and 2 touchdowns and Bassey had 117 yards receiving. Cam Genung helped Columbus' passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 75 yards.
He went 13-25 with 3 interceptions.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Sandy Creek's Cole Garvin and Demarre Kitt have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-0 quarterback Garvin has thrown for 1,581 yards this season, while Kitt has 42 catches for 703 yards. Mikell Lands-Davis from the Cougars leads the league in rushing with 1,623 yards.
Chip Walker's team's Eric Swinney is a mere 67 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. In 122 carries Swinney has accumulated 933 yard this year.
Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when the Patriots' Kitt goes up against Columbus' Bassey.
Next week's game between Sandy Creek and Phil Marino's team will feature a good passing match up as Garvin will test his arm against Bassey's defensive ability.
A big matchup in AAAA Region 5 this week will be when LaGrange takes on the Trojans. The Grangers are in sixth place, while Carrollton is in second place.
The Blue Devils lost to Alexander 49-21 last week, the largest margin of any game. James was a bright spot for Columbus, as he ran for 50 yards in the defeat.
