Flint Hill is 8-1 against Potomac School since November of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Huskies will welcome the Panthers at 5:30 p.m. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.
Flint Hill is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another highly-ranked state team: The Academy of the Holy Cross, who was ranked third in their home state at the time (Flint Hill was ranked sixth). The Huskies fell just short of the Tartans by a score of 2-1 on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Potomac School came up short against National Cathedral on Thursday and fell 3-1. While the Panthers didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating National Cathedral 25-17 in the first set.
Potomac School started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. The match finished with set scores of 17-25, 25-17, 25-13, 26-24.
Despite the loss, Potomac School saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Lily Gurney had 12 digs and three aces. Gurney has been hot recently, having posted 12 or more digs the last three times she's played. Avery Nierenberg also deserves some recognition as she had her first block of the season.
Potomac School's defeat dropped their record down to 6-5. As for Flint Hill, they now have a losing record of 9-10-1.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Thursday's contest: Flint Hill hasn't let much over the net this season, having averaged 4.4 blocks per game. It's a different story for Potomac School, though, as they've been averaging only 1.4 blocks. Given Flint Hill's sizable advantage in that area, the Panthers will need to find a way to close that gap.
Flint Hill skirted past Potomac School 3-2 in their previous matchup back in November of 2024. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Gurney, who had 19 digs and four aces.
