The Maranatha Minutemen entered their tilt with the Whittier Christian Heralds with seven consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with eight. Maranatha breezed by Whittier Christian at home to the tune of 42-9. The result was nothing new for Maranatha, who have now won six games by 21 points or more so far this season.
Maranatha's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Dejohn Jones led the charge by rushing for 80 yards and three touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Miles Omalley, who rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown on only 11 carries.
Despite the loss, Whittier Christian still got an impressive performance from Jake Martinez, who rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.0 yards per carry. Martinez hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for six straight games.
Maranatha's victory was their fifth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 9-1. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 38.4 points per game. As for Whittier Christian, their loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 6-4.
Maranatha will head out on the road to face off against Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in California (Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary is ranked 439th, while Maranatha is ranked 458th). As for Whittier Christian, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Duarte at 7:00 p.m. Duarte knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past six contests -- so hopefully Whittier Christian likes a good challenge.
