The Robert C. Byrd Eagles will head out on the road to square off against the Elkins Tigers at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Robert C. Byrd is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
Robert C. Byrd is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: Bridgeport, who was ranked eighth at the time (Robert C. Byrd was ranked ninth). The Eagles came out on top against the Indians by a score of 8-4 on Wednesday.
Xavier Carvelli was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Cooper Floyd was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one double. That home run was his first of the season. Landon Frazier was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Robert C. Byrd lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in May of 2025.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Elkins duked it out with Grafton on Thursday. The Tigers lost 17-2 to the Bearcats. The Tigers' loss continues a trend for the team, making it three in a row.
Brayden Biller made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run.
Robert C. Byrd's record now sits at 8-3. As for Elkins, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Robert C. Byrd has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Elkins struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Robert C. Byrd's way against Elkins in their previous matchup two weeks ago, as Robert C. Byrd made off with a 13-2 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
