After taking the lead in the fourth quarter,
Sapulpa (Okla.) held on for a 13-10 victory over
Muskogee (Okla.) on Saturday. The difference for the Chieftains was
Austin Feathers thew a touchdown to
Sam Johnson.
After trailing 7-3 at the half, the Roughers went ahead on a passing touchdown with 7:00 left in the third. Sapulpa finally took the lead for good as Feathers thew a touchdown to Johnson with 6:00 to go in the fourth quarter.
By the end of the third, SHS found itself trailing by 3 points as Muskogee captured the lead thanks to one score in the quarter. MHS scored on a passing touchdown in the quarter.
The Chieftains' standout player in the win was
Sam Gottsch. The junior quarterback ran for one touchdown.
The Roughers' lone touchdown came on a 9-yard pass in the third quarter.
Coming into the game Sapulpa had allowed 24.8 points per game this year. The defense really stepped up, holding Muskogee below its season average of 15.8 points scored per game.
The Chieftains got revenge for last year's 38-28 loss to MHS with the victory.
The loss comes after Muskogee defeated Edison 33-7 last week.
Muskogee (1-6) will play a 6A District 2 game against Jenks next week, while Sapulpa (5-2) will take on Westmoore also in a 6A District 2 game.
