The previous record of 42 was held by Prince Fielder, now in his seventh season as a top-notch slugger for the Milwaukee Brewers. Fielder played three years for Florida Air Academy and his final year for Eau Gallie, both in Melbourne, Fla.
"It was pretty awesome," Thompson told MaxPreps today. "I had no idea what the record was. I feel so blessed. When my dad told me it was Prince Fielder (who had the record), it shocked me even more."
He broke Fielder's record last Friday with his 14th blast this year, a 335-foot home run on a changeup off a long-time friend and Virginia Tech recruit, Alex Perez of LaSalle (Miami). He added No. 15 on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Thompson also shares (with three others) the single-season state record of 19 home runs, which he accomplished last year. He is batting a lofty .518 (43-for-83) with seven doubles, one triple, 44 runs, 35 RBIs and 13 walks. He has struck out just 10 times.
Thompson and Orangewood Christian (Maitland, Fla.) senior
Alex Carter share the state lead currently with 15 home runs apiece.
While he practices for the baseball playoffs, the versatile Thompson also is working out on his own in football where he is a big-time prospect at quarterback. He has made a commitment to the University of Miami and could play both sports.
Thompson was also named the
MaxPreps Sophomore Baseball Player of the Year last season.
