Baseball Recap: Fort Morgan's Luck Changes for the Better on Saturday

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Valley, Fort Morgan was happy to have turned things around on Saturday. They walked away with an 11-6 win over the Platte Valley Broncos. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Mustangs as it put an end to their six-game losing streak.

Cooper Chisum made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over 6.2 innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off 11 hits (and only one walk). Those eight strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Samson Ortega, who went 1-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. He has become a key player for Fort Morgan: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 1-9 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Izeiah Ortiz, who got on base in two of his five plate appearances with two runs.

Fort Morgan always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .525. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Fort Morgan's win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 6-9. As for Platte Valley, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-6 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Fort Morgan will venture away from home to take on Weld Central at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Mustangs are facing the Rebels at the right time seeing as the Rebels are stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Platte Valley, they are taking a road trip to face off against Eaton at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
